Web Site Content EnhancementProfessional Web Site Content Enhancement / Writing

Writing for the web is quite different from writing for the traditional print media. The large number of sites on the web makes it difficult for your web site to be noticed. You need good web content, written in the right way in order to make a difference.

A major difference in writing for the Web compared to the print media is the inherently impersonal nature of the medium. You have to overcome the impersonal nature of the medium. Be informal and conversational in your writing.

Visitors to your site will have a particular goal in mind. They would skim the content until they find something relevant to them. So, your web writing needs to be direct and to the point. The information should be presented logically and written with your readers in mind. Web users dislike verbosity when they do not find the content relevant to them. But if they are interested in it, they are prepared to spend time on reading it. Use brief sentences, short paragraphs and simple language. A 100-word paragraph may be quite long for a web page. Long paragraphs send a wrong signal to the readers.

The heading at the top of the page should make clear the objective of that page. Use sub-headings, bold text and italicized text to break up the information. If the page text exceeds 300 words, subheadings are very useful for the readers.

Links and anchors are an essential part of web writing. Links give the reader the ability to interact with a web page. Informative text links are helpful for visitors at the point of departure.

Usage of bulleted lists gives an overview of key points in a page. It is an extremely effective way of making your content easier to remember.

Usage of active verbs highly increases the effectiveness of content. The writer also benefits, because the reader stays interested.
  • Web users do not like to scroll too much. If you are writing long pieces of text, then split it up into multiple pages.
  • Do not commit the blunder of your web site becoming like a brochure. A web site providing information only about the company, products and services is very boring and not favorable for repeated visits.
  • Spelling and grammatical mistakes can ruin the reliability of an otherwise professional Web site. Such errors can make you look like that you do not worry about the details.
  • The style of writing also depends a lot on the nature of the web site. An academic web site takes the reader through a lengthy argument before reaching a conclusion. In contrast, a journalistic article presents the most important information in the first paragraph.
  • Writing on web is subjected to copyright restrictions. The rights to the content remain with the copyright holder. Internet copyright regulations are still developing but there are already standard accepted conventions.
  • Although there are differences in writing for web and print media but good web sites should make the most out of the writing strategies developed over the past few centuries for print. "Content is King" the adage goes, and it is true. Even the best looking web site will not fulfil its potential if the information it contains is not kept up-to-date. The more current and comprehensive the information on your site, the more visitors will visit and keep coming back.
